Whiskey Glasses by Normann Copenhagen

Karen

Designed by Rikke Hagen .  Once again Rikke has designed an exclusive glass for Normann Copenhagen – one that combines elegance, pleasure and function in a simple, Nordic design.

Whiskey conveys an elegant expression, and the entire experience revolves around how you hold the glass in your.  Aroma, temperature and volume all come together and the wide opening completes the indulgence.

Rikke explains ” Just like the Cognac glass I have designed, my inspiration for the Whiskey glass stems from my passion fore collecting stones on the beach.  The act of playing with stones in one’s hand is an serene, meditative movement can be summed up in a functional and aesthetic design.  The curve at the bottom provides a natuaral grasp for the glass, and the little bubble elegantly elevates the ice cubes like little ice blocks”

Yet another brilliant design by Erik Magnussen

Karen

Danish company  Stelton, who make a number of seriously sleek and beautiful homeware products often designed by big names such as Paul Smith and Arne Jacobsen. The ABS Plast is designed by Erik Magnussen and is fresh for 2012. It comes in three colours (all of which are featured here; aqua, azur and smoke) and the best news about it is that they fit with Brita’s water filters.  So why not start the year with the best looking water jug around.

Funky Lights by Angelpoise

Karen

Designed by Kenneth Grange an industrial designer born in London in 1929.

Kenneth Grange views product design as an opportunity for innovation rather than merely as a means to aesthetic improvement, which is why he sees it as such an important part of the manufacturing process.

The Type1228 wall light is one of these innovations. The two tone shade is coloured on the outside and white on the inside giving a good working light and a pleasant ambience around the room.

The Type1228 was also the first product by Angelpoise where the shade can be rotated vertically.

The History of “Keep Calm & Carry On”

Karen

Keep Calm and Carry On was a poster produced by the British government in 1939 during the beginning of the Second World War, intended to raise the morale of the British public in the event of invasion.

Seeing only limited distribution, it was little known. The poster was rediscovered in 2000 and has been re-issued by a number of private sector companies, and used as the decorative theme for a range of other products. There are only two known surviving examples of the poster outside government archives.

The poster was third in a series of three. The previous two posters from the series, “Freedom Is In Peril. Defend It With All Your Might” (400,000 printed) and “Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory” (800,000 printed)

Inspiration for Life

Karen

I once read this quote:  ” When we focus our energy towards constructing a passionate, meaningful life, we are tossing a pebble into the world, creating a beautiful ripple effect of inspiration.”

There are many things in the world that can be an inspiration.  One of the strongest forms of inspiration come from words.  Words which Keep Calm Gallery have generated into beautifully inspiring handmade screen prints.  Here are some of my favourites.  I hope they inspire you as much as they inspire me.

In their latest version made of polypropylene the Armchairs now offer even greater sitting comfort and importantly can now be recycled.

So whether your little one’s want to rock for fun or curl up with a picture book.  The kids RAR rocker is perfect for all occasions.

Karen

With over 4,000 entries from 40 countries, the annual red dot design award ranks among the largest design competitions worldwide. The competition is divided into two sections – product design and communication design – which are staged and adjudicated separately. The coveted trophy in both is the red dot, the international seal of quality for outstanding design. The award winning products are displayed online and published in a yearbook.

We can see why today’s item won the 2011 Red Dot Design Award. It’s a kitchen item with a twist… The Callista lemon squeezer is a new product from Blomus, now available at Dennis and McGregor.
